There is just something about a sunny late winter day in Montana that hits different. This Whitefish Lake engagement session with Noah & Tyler seriously felt like the perfect reminder of why couples sessions before your wedding are so important! The lake was still icy in spots, the mountains were covered in snow, and the sun decided to absolutely show off for us at the end of February. These two are high school sweethearts, newly engaged, and expecting a baby, which honestly made the whole session feel even sweeter. They were playful, laid back, constantly laughing, and fully just enjoying being together, which always makes for the best photos!

Why a Whitefish Lake Engagement Session Helps You Feel Comfortable
I tell couples this all the time, but your engagement session is about way more than just getting cute save-the-date photos. It is really your chance to get comfortable with your photographer before your wedding day. A lot of people feel nervous being in front of the camera at first, and honestly… that is completely normal. Most couples are not professional models walking into this thing knowing exactly what to do with their hands.
That is why sessions like Noah & Tyler’s are so important. By the end of our time together, they were fully relaxed, joking around, cuddling up naturally, and completely in their own little world. That comfort shows up in your photos in the BEST way. You learn how your photographer directs, poses, and prompts you, and your photographer learns how you interact as a couple. It stops feeling like “taking photos” and starts feeling like just hanging out together while someone documents it.

Your Engagement Session Is Basically a Trial Run for Your Wedding Day
This is also the time where you figure out if your photographer is truly the right fit for you, and honestly, that matters so much more than people realize. Your photographer is with you for a huge part of your wedding day. We are around your family, your friends, your vendors, your emotional moments, your chaos, your happy tears… literally all of it. You should actually like being around the person photographing your wedding.
Your engagement session gives you a chance to see how your photographer works before committing to the full wedding experience. Do you like the editing style? Do you feel confident with their direction? Do you love the way they frame moments and capture emotion? Did they make you feel awkward or did they make you feel like the hottest, happiest version of yourself? Those things matter. If you leave your session smiling, excited, and feeling completely taken care of, that is usually a really good sign!

The Best Photos Happen When You Actually Trust Your Photographer
One of my favorite things about Noah & Tyler’s session was how natural everything felt. Nothing felt overly posed or forced. We wandered along the shoreline, soaked up the sunshine, laughed through the windy moments, and let things unfold naturally. Those are always the sessions that end up feeling the most meaningful because the connection is real.
Trust plays such a huge role in that. When you trust your photographer, you stop overthinking every little thing. You stop worrying about how you look every second and just focus on each other. That is when the magic happens. The playful in-between moments, the forehead kisses, the laughing mid-spin, the way someone looks at their person when they think nobody is noticing… those are the moments you will care about forever.
